Book All Our Wrong Todays: A Novel Review :

I read this entire book in a couple days on a couple of long train and plane rides, and it was good I had those blocks of time, because this book is a thrilling page-turner that I really couldn't put down. I found myself really touched by how much the main characters drew me in; I really cared about what happened to them and was getting anxious towards the end when it legitimately wasn't clear how the story would turn out for any of them. Creating good fiction about time travel is a huge challenge (something the book itself references several times in a meta fashion), but Mastai does a masterful job with it - he creates a web of divergent timelines, and even when the reader begins to feel a bit scrambled, he weaves them back together to tie off the loose ends, and he does so in a way that delivers some terrific twists. This book is fun and thought-provoking.
Remember back in the day when the future didn’t suck? You know, like in the 1950s and ‘60s with stories set decades in the future—the time we live in now—where the 21st century is a techno utopian world? Well, it happened! In 2016, humanity has been reaping the benefits of five decades of peace, prosperity, and ridiculously advanced technology thanks entirely to the invention of the Goettreider Engine, a device that harnesses the energy of earth’s rotation to create clean and unlimited energy. Now, that doesn’t mean everyone’s lives are perfect. Some in this fantastical world muddle through as average people, people like Tom Barren who coasts along as most of us do. Tom tells us his story, what his utopian world is like thanks to Lionel Goettreider’s legacy, about his brilliant father, and what it was like to grow up as a disappointment spawn of his genius father.Inspired by the great Lionel Goettreider who made this peaceful and advanced world possible, Tom’s father worked to invent a time machine and intended to send professionally trained chrononauts on the first ever trip back in time to the very moment Lionel Goettreider turned on his device on July 11, 1965 and they would do this on the 51st anniversary of the Goettreider Engine’s debut.Tom isn’t known for much other than being the son of a genius but he has a penchant for bad timing. Things happen and Tom makes an irrational decision to use his father’s time machine, doing it out of spite, in order to be the first…to finally be something to his father. It was exactly the kind of selfishness and pettiness expected of a milk toast of a human being like Tom to do, but in travelling back to the moment where the Goettreider Engine was supposed to go online, Tom kind of accidentally ruined it for the rest of us. It wasn’t entirely Tom’s fault, but the result of his arrival into the past at this most pivotal moment in human history was that the Goettreider Engine failed, and history was irrevocably altered, so you could say that Tom actually did accomplish something after all.You know how sci fi has spent the last several decades awash in post-apocalyptic and dystopian visions? Well, it turns out that we’re that dystopian hellscape. “Funny, I don’t feel dystopian,” you might say. Well, when Tom wakes up into our 2016 he sure sees it that way. War, pollution, poverty, crime, disease, Crocs…our 2016 looks bleak compared to his “Jetsons” 2016. But despite the rest of the humanity writhing in this “dank blister of a world”, Tom’s personal life in this alternate reality is vastly better. He has a mom and dad who are both alive and emotionally available, a sister he didn’t have in his home reality, and there’s his love interest Penny who they share a deep connection that straddles two realities. So, Tom is now faced with the dilemma. He has committed an atrocity that has no equal in creating this wretched world and yet he’s on fire here. Does he even deserve to be happy? And then the consequences of his alternate self start to emerge. That’s the general plot without getting into spoilers, which that alone is enough for me to scrape up the dollars to give the book a try. But it was Elan Mastai’s engaging, self-deprecatingly funny tone that kept me eagerly reading every single word. I’ll admit it; I have a short attention span. I can barely tolerate reading my own reviews. I understand the need to establish a world for a story to unfold, but far too many authors overestimate the post-millennium reader’s willingness to cathect through, and sit quietly for hours when alternatively Netflix can fulfill our need for stimuli without asking anything more than $10.81 a month. Mastai’s screen writer’s sensibilities shows respect for economy of movement and of our tenuous attention span. There is not a moment of my time wasted, not an excessive word typed. I found myself effortlessly invested in Tom’s story. He’s honest, insightful, hilarious, and the story itself doesn’t ever linger any longer on a scene than it needs to be. Mastai’s pacing in story telling is impeccable. And just when I thought I figured this was going to be a “time travel romp,” which I was perfectly happy with reading, Mastai zagged; he went deep, even dark on me.I’m not a professional literary critic or a theoretical physicist, but I did stay the night at a Holiday Express, so I can safely say that I’m an expert on all variations of time travel, quantum entanglement, quantum consciousness, and the various manifestations multiverse theories in fiction. Mastai addresses several concepts that so many other authors never addressed such as how space plays a part in time travel and how much time does it take to travel in time.If done right, stories on time travel and multiple realities should do more than just tantalize us with the coolness of time travel, it should jostle the reader to contemplate the nature of existence simply by the fact that travelling back in time is counter to our human experience. Mastai not only delivers on that promise of entertaining while evoking some deeper inner discussion, I found myself inhaling every word, legitimately surprised by turns in the story, and came away feeling as though I wasted so much of my life before reading this novel. I know that last bit sounds weird. Why would you want to feel as though you’ve wasted so much of your life? What I’m trying to say is that I should have been reading works like this and other literary gems instead of obsessing over our current 24/7 dumpster fire reality that I have no control over. But then again, Mastai reminds me it could be a lot worse, so scratch that. So, let me say this instead. If there was an alien race that could save us from…I don’t know, from a flood of gamma radiation from a nearby supernova heading towards Earth or whatever, but was unsure if we were worthy of saving, I’d ask them to read “All Our Wrong Todays.”
